Hi, greetings, Happy Warriors, and thank you for being part of the Rabbi Daniel Lapin show, where I, your Rabbi, reveal how the world really works, and one way the world really works is that when things get a little old, they don't perform quite as well as they did when they were new. That obviously applies to our bodies, it applies to our cars, it applies to computers, and every now and then it's always wonderful to be able to supercharge your machine, and what I want to do today is to give you a program to supercharge your entire life, a revolutionary idea that will not, can I'm not using a Weasley word here that suggests an out in case it doesn't work well.

I didn't say it will, I just said it could. No, I'm telling you, it actually will absolutely revolutionize your life and refresh and supercharge your body and your soul. What do I mean? Well, imagine that you have, shall we say, a three year old, four year old car, five year old car, and you say to you, you know what, I don't want to get a new car, but I'm willing to spend a few $100 on just really getting it into good new exciting shape that it'll be fun to drive again. Well, there's a few, there are few things you can do. You can plug your laptop into the OBD port, and you know that's there's a socket under the dash that, that whenever you're having your car analyzed, they, the technician plugs, and well, you can plug into that as well, and there are programs that you can tune up your engine control unit, and that that's a process that'll modify the software in your vehicle's engine and computer to optimize performance. It can increase horsepower, it can increase torque, it can improve the response of your gas pedal. If you're interested in fuel efficiency, it can do that, and you know it'll, it'll adjust air fuel ratios and ignition timing and boost pressure, you can all these things you know, and you won't recognize your car.

You could even install a Magnuson supercharger, which in many cars you can do that. You can install cold air intakes, you can install exhaust upgrades, I mean, you can easily increase the horsepower, the power of your car 10 15% sometimes even more, and so it will feel like a new car, you can get new tires, you can even get lighter wheels, and that improves the there's a lot of things you can do well, I'm talking about something like that for your whole life, and one of the things you want to do is you definitely want to get your family, your spouse, you want to get them on board with this, because this works a whole lot better if you're not all on your own, if you are on your own, it's possible. It's not quite as easy, and the results are not nearly as dramatic. So, what is this life tune-up hack I'm talking about? Well, it's called the Sabbath, it's called, or the Shabbat in Hebrew.

Wow, really. Yeah, let me explain. Let's start off with a question. Why do you think we have a seven day week? You do realize how completely illogical it is, right? It's crazy, because when you think about it, you know, May the 14th might be a Thursday this year, it might be a Wednesday or a Friday next year, the year after that it could be a Tuesday, and so it makes a mess of the calendar, and so let's say this year there may be five Tuesdays in the month of May. Next year there could only be four. Everything is different every year, and so you have to go out and buy a new calendar every December, but if my system would be adopted, then we could just print the calendar with a laminated film, and on December 30-first, you just wipe it clean with a damp cloth, and then you use exactly the same calendar next year. If you do payroll, you know why payroll is expensive, because got to be calculated every single year differently, because the actual day of the week on which pay is that it might be a weekend this month. There is a solution, and the problem is caused by a seven day week. Let me explain. Let's try this thought experiment. Imagine that way back in the dawn of time, you are in charge of the village's desire to find out whether the time we live in, is it cyclical or is it linear, and they've begun to suspect that it might be cyclical, because summer seems to come back on a regular basis, winter seems to go away, and then come back. Winter becomes spring, spring becomes summer, summer becomes fall. It seems to happen on a, but what's the rule? What is the.. how does this work? So, what you might do is, you might go to the beach and put a stick in the sand, and you watch the shadow right as the sun comes up, the shadow of the stick gets shorter and shorter, and then as the sun, as the sun comes up, it gets shorter, and then as the sun goes down, it gets longer and longer.

At the point it's at its shortest, put a little pebble at the end of the shadow. Come back the next day, sun rises, the shadow is longer, it gets shorter and shorter. At its shortest point, you put a pebble in. Is it on top of yesterday's pebble? No, it's a little bit to the side, and if you keep doing this, you notice your pebbles make a pattern, and after 365 days, the pebble is exactly back on top of the very first pebble you started with. So you run into the village and you announce to great fanfare, I've got it, I've got it. We live in a world of a 365 day cycle, and everybody's enthusiastic and excited, and they give you the honor of naming this thing, and you might call it wobbly, if that's what you decide to call it, call it anything you like, but it's a 365 day unit, and this is very exciting, but after a little while they come back to you, and they say, you know, 365 days is long. Could you give us a time measurement that's a bit shorter, because we want to sometimes be able to say to somebody, you know, we'll see you on the 18th day of the next wobbly, but that's 365 days from now, so we need a shorter time. Is there anything you can give us that's shorter? You go back to the beach, and the sun goes down, and you lie there still, and you look in the heavens, and you see the moon. You say, 'Oh, I wonder if the moon can help me. And you watch the moon, and the next day the moon's a little smaller, and the day after that, it's a bit smaller, and then it vanishes, and the day after that, it starts coming back, little crescent, and becomes bigger until it's a quarter, and then a full moon, and you notice it's exactly 30 days, to be technically precise, it's 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and three and a third seconds, but it doesn't matter, 30 days. Well. You wait another month just to make sure you got it right, and sure enough, you run back into the town.

You say, I previously gave you 365 days, I'm now giving you 30 days, and they say, Is there any relationship between the 30 and the 365 And you say, sure, we're going to make 12 of these 30 things, which we might call a geeky, into a wobbly, and they do a quick mental calculation, 30 days, 12 of them, that's 360 days, but you told us it's 365 Okay, I'll tell you what we'll do, every second geeky will make 31 days instead of 30, so it'll be 3130 3130 3130 so six of the geekys will have 631 days, and six of them will have 30 days. They do a quick calculation: 12 times 330 is 360 plus there's six one days, that's 366 They come back, but it's still not going to work, because there's one extra day. You say, "No problem, we'll, we'll knock off a day on February. Well, you get the idea, right? And it'll adjust out, and everything will be fine. And so you write it out for them, and from then onwards they start printing calendars with wobblies of 365 days and geekys of 3130 3130 days, except for one month, which is going to be less a day. Everything works great, and that's exactly what you did, and what you did there is replicate something that goes back, but wait, after a little while they come back to you, and they say, Can you give us something shorter? You think no problem. Back to the beach, lie on your back, look at the heavens in the daytime, you look in the nighttime, you can't find anything that is on a cyclic nature that'll give you a shorter period of time than your 30 day mood cycle, and you look and you look and you look, and with the naked eye you see nothing, and you're quite depressed because you've become used to being a celebrity in your village as they heap honors upon you for this wonderful discovery that you make constantly, and then it suddenly dawns on you. Wait a sec, you don't need to give them the astronomical source. There doesn't have to be an astronomical source. They just want you to decree a shorter time frame, so that we can have 365 day wobblies and 3031 day geekys, and now we just need something shorter, whatever it is, and you think that's great. I'm now going to come up with a number of days that'll be the shorter timeframe, and my question to you is, How many days would you make it, don't say seven, because I know you to be a wise, happy warrior, and you wouldn't make such a stupid decision. Seven is like the last number you should think of, because seven does not divide into 30, and seven doesn't divide into 365 It's a mess, but what would work well. That's right, five days would work beautifully.

You'd have six of them in a geeky, and you'd have 770 73 in a wobbly, it would work absolutely beautifully, and it's so well that that leaves the question of why it's so obvious what I'm telling you. There is no question at all that you would choose five days with no more than five minutes of thought. You choose five days because it works. Seven doesn't work. Seven doesn't divide into 30, it doesn't divide into 365 It's a mess, which leaves the question of why do we have a seven day cycle. Why is it so much so that whenever there has been a secular regime and there's the clue they've tried to do away with the seven day cycle, because the seven day cycle is a weekly reminder of a phrase that echoes and re-echoes through the primal memory of humanity. In six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh He rested. Wow, it's incredible. That's why there's a seven day. That's it. There is no other reason. And secular regimes, atheistic regimes have from time to time attempted to do away with it. So in 1793 leaders of the French Revolution created a new calendar and they made it into 310 day weeks in every month and they worked very hard to force the French people to adopt the 10 day week it failed and what about 12 years later, Napoleon abandoned it. It was 1805 gone. Then later the Soviet Union came into being after World War Two, after World War One, pardon me, in 1917 1918 and in 1929 like this is early on in the history of the Soviet Union, but they couldn't wait to institute a five day work week, because five is logical and seven is a reminder to, and you'll remember, I mean, Russian citizens used to be religious, it was the Russian Orthodox Church, was a big, important church, and, and everybody knew the week was a reminder that God created the world in six days, and He rested on the seventh, and so the seventh day was called the Lord's Day, was the day of rest, everybody understood that, and so, not surprisingly, in their frenzied desire to eliminate religion, the Soviets instituted the five day week, and they wouldn't use day names; they originally gave the day's colors, and it was a big mess, because every citizen, according to this registration number was assigned a different number, so different members of the same family would have a day of rest on different, it was horribly confusing, the whole place was a mess, and three years later they tried again a six day week with numbers replacing the colors, so again, the Russian people just didn't buy it.

The Soviet authorities forced it and drove it down the throats of their citizens. They didn't want to know, and so by 1940 Russians were back on their regular seven day cycle, just like everybody else, and that's where we all are. The League of Nations, early on, the precursor to the United Nations tried to redesign the calendar, and they, in they solicited suggestions, and many of the suggestions were for a five day week, once again, largely through America, and largely through the very large Christian population in the United States of America, America told the League of Nations, forget it's not happening, we're keeping the seven day week, and that's exactly what happened. Amazingly, we're still using the seven day week. So, my dear happy warriors, what am I suggesting? What I'm suggesting is, is really very simple. I'm suggesting that you observe and honor the Sabbath, like the fourth commandment. Every now, it's very difficult to start doing it. Is very hard. You got to get your spouse on board. You got to get your kids on board. I'm suggesting you try it once now. The extraordinary thing is that early in May, for President Trump decreed Jewish Heritage Month, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, and he designated May 2026 as Jewish Heritage Month, and he asked Jewish Americans to all observe the Sabbath on Sabbath, May the 16th.

That was what he wanted from sundown on Friday night till nightfall on Saturday night. He wanted, he asked American Jews to observe the Sabbath for 25 days, 25 hours, of course. Many do exactly that already, but many more do not. And I don't know the background to it. I do not know how that came about, but it's, it's really interesting. It might have had something to do with Charlie Kirk's book, who Charlie Kirk was, and his family were keeping the Sabbath when he, he died, when he was murdered. They were already doing it for quite some time. He told me about it himself, and he wrote a book called Stop in the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform your life, that's what he wrote. I haven't read the book yet, I have to tell you, but I think he was on to something, I really do. So, here's what I think you should do, and you may want to either listen to this again or take notes, whatever it is, but I think you should designate, you should pick. Week one week, and it can be on Saturday, and I think Saturday is a good idea. First of all, it is the original Sabbath at the Council of Nicaea changed the.. I think it was the Council of Nicaea in about 300 in the year 300 changed it from Saturday to Sunday, I think. If I have that correct, I believe that's right, but at any rate, Saturday is a good idea, because Sunday, you know, you may want to go to church on Sunday.

You may want to do, if Sunday works better for you, go for it. Pick yourself a week, don't say I'm doing this every week, because it's not going to be that simple, but pick yourself one week to try it one time, and what's great about this is it's not as if you have to do it four times before you feel the benefit, you'll, you'll feel it right after the first one, and then probably you're going to want to say, you know what, let's do it next month as well, let's make it the second Saturday of next month or the second Sunday, let's do it, let's try and do it every month, that's what you might do, and then you may keep doing that, you may increase it, but the thing is, the reason you'll find it so satisfying is that I think that it res, that it echoes a built-in circadian rhythm that we have, right, we all know that there are natural rhythms in the body regulated by chemical movements and hormonal movements.

Women obviously have regular cycles, but men do as well, of different kinds, and one of the most obvious, obviously, is a 24 hour cycle. If you try and mess people up by keeping them in an environment where the light is on, shall we say, for 26 hours and off for only 2022 hour, 22 hour, excuse me, you keep the lights on for shall we say 16 hours and off for only eight hours to try and fool people's bodies in experiments. You find that we don't do well with that. It's as if we have built into us a 12 hour on a 12 hour off cycle, and there are other, there are other cycles and rhythms that take place. I think we have a seven day rhythm as well. I have no evidence for it. I'm not aware of any literature on it, but in my own life I have experimented and tried and seen that somehow now it may be because I'm used to it, but I think we do have a seven day cycle, but whether we do or we don't, it doesn't make any difference. You will find that six days on and one day off works really, really well.

Now, what is the off about? Well, let me start off with the most obvious. Do you know what an addiction is? An addiction is when you find yourself almost unable to restrain yourself from a certain action or a certain activity or a certain behavior, even when you know you should, you want to, so you know alcohol can become an addiction, drugs can become an addiction, but for most of us, the most common addiction from which we all, many of us, suffer is screen addiction. If the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning is look at your phone instead of looking at your spouse, if you're lucky enough to sleep next to one, you have an addiction. It's as simple as that. If you find that watching videos consumes an inordinate amount of your time, you have an addiction. If you have your phone beeping whenever anybody texts you or emails you, you have an addiction.

Why would you want to be interrupted from your life just because somebody else sent you a message? All of these things suggest addictive behavior. Best way to master your addiction, best way to overcome it, best way to become boss of yourself is take one day without devices. Now, at first glance, it would appear to be impossible, but I assure you that it absolutely is possible. All that has to happen is you either can put on your email a message, or you just tell, send out, you send out a message, either by text or by email, you know, to the, to the, to the 10 people with whom you communicate most often and most regular. Literally just saying, as an experiment, we'll be turning off our devices in our family from sundown on Friday, shall we say, or Saturday until nightfall on Saturday or Sunday, whichever you choose, and so I will get back to you at that time, you know. Until then, please leave a message, or whatever it is, but it's easy to do that.

You actually can do, and so pick your Sabbath. You may want to give yourself a little bit of advanced notice. Pick the day it's going to be, notify the, you know, the 10 or 15 people with whom you're most regularly in contact that you won't be reachable on that day. What are you going to do on that day? Well, you're going to rediscover the lost joy of reading. Is there a book you've always wanted to read? You can get pretty far in a book in 25 hours, you will love it, and you will rediscover how much more delightful reading is than watching a screen. Now that's not all. There's one more thing you got to do, and that is not use an gasoline or diesel or electrically powered vehicle during the time of the Sabbath. Am I making, am I sounding as if I'm making this too hard?

Well, look, no pain, no gain. It's obviously going to hurt a little bit, but I think what you're going to find is that the advantages and the benefits, the tune-up, the supercharge it's going to give your life is going to be spectacular, but you got to do the experiment, you really got to try it out, and so no transport, no car, no motorcycle, no battery-driven car, no busses, no airplanes. Don't use mechanical transport. I'm going to say, although I don't do this, I'm going to say you should not rule out, at least initially, for the first little while, first few months don't rule out bicycles or scooters, and certainly walking. Obviously, did your doctor ever tell you you should do more walking? And you can take a really nice walk on your Sabbath. What's more, you can do it together with friends or family, really, really, I mean, I hear myself speaking. I realize I, this is a big ask, but it's only a big ask for the first time, because after that, I don't think I'm going to have to reinforce it. I think you're going to be very excited.

This is so powerful, and I've got to tell you that if there is one thing that unifies Jews who are connected to their faith, it's the Sabbath, and people get together on the Sabbath. Now, one of the things it does over the course of years and years is it creates community, because if we're not using cars or motorcycles or busses or Ubers, well, then the only way we can socialize with people is through walking, and so people tend to live together in a vicinity, it creates a neighborhood, creates a community. Now I'm not suggesting you should move, relocate, no, but I'm explaining one of the impacts of this, and so when people build a synagogue, what then happens is that people move to, if they like the synagogue and they like the rabbi, they move to be within walking distance of the synagogue, and so you'll find communities pretty much are situated within about a mile radius around a synagogue.

People figure 1520, minutes, that's how long an easy walk of a mile is. People are willing to do that, and you know, unless the weather's awful, people are okay with that, and from my many friends in the Amish communities, I heard the similar thing happens there, where a popular leader, popular bishop, I think that's the term, sets up a church, people tend to live within an easy buggy ride of that church, and it creates a community. It's perfectly normal and perfectly natural. It's what you'd expect to happen, and sure enough, it does. But other than that, what happens is you have time pressure off you, and you will experience a feel. Of being stress free, that the last time you had was when you were totally on vacation somewhere, and that's really what the Sabbath is. If I tell you that it's taking, it's like taking a weekly mini cruise, it's like going on a vacation cruise once a week, it really is.

That's what it feels like. It feels like being totally disconnected from everything that produces stress, because you're not using your computer, you're not using your laptop, your phone is turned off and put away. Can you believe what that feels like? You're going to have withdrawal symptoms at the beginning, but then you're going to pick up a book, or you're going to discover how nice it is to have a conversation with your spouse, if you're lucky enough to have one, and you're going to have time with your children, if you're lucky enough to have children, and maybe you'll even invite some relatives, some family or some friends over for a meal on Friday night or a meal on Saturday lunch, we do that all the time, and it's so wonderful because nobody's looking at their watch during the meal, and we sit and we chat sometimes, we sing songs, it's just fun, it's things we wouldn't dream of doing on the six working days of the week.

Yeah, that's true for me. Sunday is a working day, because Saturday is my Sabbath, and so I don't think it matters so much as you begin to try and experiment this. I recommend Saturday, but rather do it on Sunday, then don't do it at all. If that's the only day you feel you can do it, give it a shot. It's something, an experience you will never have had before. You will truly be astounded at the experience, and come Saturday night, nightfall, and you're going to feel a slight tinge. Sadness might be too strong a word to use, but you're going to feel a slight tinge of I really have to get off this cruise boat. Do I really have to get off this vacation and go back to the real world. Well, yeah, you do. Yeah, it's time to get back to taking care of finance, because what you're doing on this day is you're focusing on family, friendship, faith, and fitness.

You may not be doing exercise and working out on your Shabbat, if you want to, you can, but not driving to the gym, but there's part of your spiritual being that you will find nurtured, and your physical being, your body will be nurtured by the lack of stress, and I want to mention one other benefit. There are many other benefits, but I'm only going to mention one more for now, and that is, if you think about it, the six days of our week, the normal, and for most, you know, for most of you, it'll be seven days, the day each day is focused on things, on objects. Think about it, you know. You jump in your car, you pick up your phone, you open your computer, whatever it is. There are things, you go shopping, you buy things.

This is one day that is not about having, it's about being, it's not about acquiring, it's not about using, it's not about things, it's not about externalities, it's about living and being. It's a beautiful thing, and you know you won't be shocked if I tell you that traditionally the Sabbath is a time for husbands and wives to be together, it's a time to build and nurture and cherish that relationship, and Who knows how much stability and durability and harmony and happiness in a marriage is contributed to by the fact that for one day every week you actually focus on one another. It's extraordinary. So I really hope you give this a try. I've never made the suggestion before, but I really think it's a big one. It acknowledges the reality of a seven day week, whose reality is based in the idea of Sabbath. That's what the seven days means.

That's why atheistic regimes like the French Revolution. And the Soviet Union tried to eliminate it because it's a weekly reminder of the divine world in which we live and the love that God has for us and the fourth commandment, honor the Sabbath day, is actually seen as evidence of God's love and care for us, because it does so much for us, and you'll find that observant Jews use a phrase very often, they say, Thank God for the Shabbat, and they mean it, because it enhances life so much. I don't want to sound as if I'm overselling it, so I'll leave it at that. But you must promise to let me know, right? Make sure you are a happy warrior.

This is putting a supercharger in your life. The creativity with which you throw yourself back into your week after the Sabbath, you can't imagine till you experience it, and, and that's really it's a little bit like, you know, how it is that by the end of a work day, you're feeling in general, you're feeling a little worn, you know, but what happens after you get up in the morning, you had a good night's sleep, you leap out of bed, you're ready to go, that is again a push pull kind of part that God has built into our creativity.

Push for the eight or nine or 10 hours of daytime work comes the night time, you pull back to an enormous extent, even sleeping, and then when you finish sleeping, you're ready to push again. It's this push-pull thrust against the universe, pull back and withdraw, relax, push again, pull back. That is a basic human rhythm of creativity in every way as you think about it, and the weak system is exactly the same day, six days push one day, pull back six days, push one day, pull back, and just as night refreshes you for those dark hours of every 24 hour cycle, so it is that the 25 hour Shabbat pullback refreshes you for the six days coming right up. That's something. It's just another benefit you are going to find that your creativity is enormously enhanced. I would also recommend that you don't write anything on Shabbat with a pen or a pencil, certainly not with an electronic device, but I wouldn't even use a pen or pencil, and the reason is because you're going to have so much creative thinking to force yourself, then to jump and write it all down interrupts the flow. You'll have plenty time.

Write it down Saturday night, write it down Sunday, write it down Monday, but your creative juices will flow as a result of this pullback of 25 hours from sundown on Friday, the sun goes down on Friday till nightfall on Saturday night. So, give it a shot. It isn't easy, but you see, working out in a gym isn't easy either. But you feel the benefits being on a diet of eating only healthily and the right amounts, not easy, but you feel the benefits. Right away, and even for me, I've been doing this all my life, but it's still.. I'll tell you one of the things that's hard for me. I love using a Kindle reader. I like it. I wish I could use it on Shabbat, but there is some time, something of tactile enjoyment in reading from a book, and so it's really the main part of the week when I enjoy reading a book, because I'm relaxed, and so that happens, that's just my thing. Do give it a shot, you won't regret it, that I can tell you, you won't regret it, and you will feel the benefit. Now you may decide the benefit is not worth it. I'd be shocked, but at least give it that first try. That's what you definitely want to do, that give it its try. And yeah, please, you're a happy warrior. Let me know how it goes.
